For a long while, I've wanted to draw Tarot cards, mainly because I am fond of the imagery and symbolism. And this weekend seemed like a good time to start, as I just bought a big, hardback bargain book called Divining Your Future that has pictures and illustrations of all the cards.
What I wanted to draw was a Tarot involving characters from one or more of the stories I've written, to invest the project with a little more personal meaning. Thinking over my stories, one seemed more "Tarotesque" than the rest, so I hereby present the first cards of the Orange Pekoe Tarot. (Yes, my story is named after tea. What can I say?) I'm not sure how many more cards I will be doing. Seventy-eight seems like a lot.
Some of the cards have "artistic" nudity, just so you know. I'll identify the characters in the cards for the benefit of those who know the story. But you don't need to know the story.
The Fool:

This card is based on Aday.
The Magician:

This card is based on Angela.
The High Priestess:

This card is based on Moira.
The Empress:

This card is based on Sophie/Thetis.

I love, I want to see more.
Perhaps just do the 22 major arcana?

Yes, good idea, I was thinking I might just do the major arcana. The funny thing is, I think I might prefer the minor arcana. I have no idea why. But I wanted to begin at the beginning! I will just limit myself to the major arcana for now so I don't feel overwhelmed.

I was wondering about color, actually. I'd like to color them, but I usually use colored pencils for coloring, and I wouldn't want the grainy texture of the pencils for these. So I'm not sure what to do. I suppose I'll just draw them first, then concern myself with the coloring (or lack thereof) later.

TartTarot deck? They are kinda pencil-coloured-in-grainy, and I quite like the effect. Might be worth experimenting with? But I am very impressed so far! They look wonderful.

The subject matter feels rather friendly to my style, somehow.

Wow, coloring would be a lot of work. I wish I had magic powers of coloring things-- or, something.

July 18 2005, 23:00:43 UTC 6 years ago
Yes, it does look a bit like that, doesn't it? But really s/he is being bit (or scratched) in the butt. Or about to be. No funny stuff is going on, I hope!

Oh, I'm glad you noticed that with the fool. I drew it that way, with the face turned away, because I think of the fool as a kind of "everyman" symbol, so one can imagine their own features there. Also, the story character it's based on has features no one can ever quite remember, so that worked out well.
As for the magician, on her table are symbols of the four suits of the minor arcana: cups, wands, swords, and pentacles. Some of the symbols I make up, but some are more traditional. I am no tarot scholar myself, though, so I don't know what all the symbols mean.
